Field Work in Earnest

I’ve been a little absent as of late, because I have been traveling. The first destination was Reno, NV. I was glad to see the city and finally have some point of reference for what it’s like other than Jonathan Richman’s song “Reno” and the film King Pin.This was also the first time I’d been in a casino and been old enough to gamble and enjoy comped drinks.
Past the wedding I attended out near Reno, I’ve been doing actual work for my actual dissertation at exotic locations like “The Library of Congress.” I’m not going to write about my dissertation, because I’ve spent so time with it that it seems to hold all the enchantment of a burlap sack of rusty nails, but I just wanted to note I’ll be traveling until next Wednesday, and then we’ll get back to our regularly scheduled programming. I will try, if I have a lull, to get a post or two up in the interim, but in the interest of keeping blogging “fun,” I’m not going to push myself too much.
For those of you considering a PhD, I recommend against it; you’ll come in full of brilliant ideas, then wake up 6 years later, only to realize you’ve started putting innocuous words like “fun” in scare quotes for no defensible reason. Then again, that’s probably just me.
