My Life Originals: the Broiled Grapefruit Punch
I’ve been pondering this punch for a while. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as the punch is not broiled, rather, it’s flavor profile is based on broiled grapefruit, which is a favorite brunch fixing of mine. Given that even Texas has been sucked into the snowpocalypse now, it seems like a fine time for a hot drink.

Broiled Grapefruit Punch
4 oz. grapefruit juice (preferably ruby red)
2 oz. apple juice
1 T. brown sugar ginger syrup*
2 oz. rumCombine juices and syrup and heat until they’re roughly as hot as a good cup of coffee. Stir in rum and serve. Garnish with a citrus twist if you feel fancy.
I realize my citrus twist is substandard. Citrus twists are not one of my many talents. I’m working on it, having perhaps picked up a bit of a technique from watching the staff at Anvil Bar & Refuge this past weekend in Houston. Sad as it is, this is perhaps the best citrus twist I’ve produced to date.
And, as always, if you test drive this drink, let me know what you think about it. I’m always open to improvements.
*To make the syrup, combine 1 c. water, 1 c. brown sugar, and 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, coarsely chopped. Heat until it forms a syrup. Let sit until cooled. Strain out ginger.
