Foodways Texas Symposium: Feb. 25 & 26 in Galveston

If you are not familiar with Foodways Texas, and you live in Texas, and you like, well, food, you probably should be. The organization, modeled in part on the example set by the Southern Foodways Association, is “a grassroots effort dedicated to studying, documenting and honoring the Lone Star State’s unique food culture.”
Foodways Texas will be holding their first annual symposium, “Gulf Coast Gathering,” February 25 and 26 in Galveston. It seems like a fine time to get out to the coast. Registration is $225 for the whole shebang, $210 for Saturday only (including roundtrip bus transportation from Houston), and $175 for students. The price includes all scheduled meals, and opportunities to rub elbows with a bunch of really smart food people, including chefs, writers, producers, and even academics. It’s also a good opportunity to support an organization that is going above and beyond to encourage the celebration and documentation of Texas’s culinary traditions.
I’ll sadly be missing out this time around — my dissertation has been demanding most of my attention lately. However, if you’re available, I very much recommend it. Some of my favorite colleagues will be there, and I’m sure they’ll show you a great time. Also, you get to eat at Gaido’s, which is probably worth the price of admission to start with.
