Field Work: Anvil Bar & Refuge
A while back, I heard about Anvil Bar & Refuge in Houston via Tipsy Texan. I was intrigued, partially because I used to live in Houston, and that city will forever occupy a rather soft spot in my heart. So, while in Houston a few weeks ago to take a stop-motion animation class from SWAMP, I dragged a few folks along with me to check out Anvil.

The bar is well worth visiting, although I was very glad we got there before 9. After we’d been there for an hour or so, the whole place was jampacked. We hovered at our little outpost, protecting our barstools from snipers with all the aggression of isolated colonists. Despite the crowd, which had something of a chilling effect on conversation, we had a pretty good time, partially because the drinks were tiptop good.
I tried out the Golden Gate Swizzle, which I liked fine but which seemed wrong for the weather somehow, and the Diplomat. The Diplomat, pictured above, was utterly divine. If you look closely in the picture, you can see that the drink even has citrus oil swirling across its surface. It’s advertised as a “fall choice” for gin martini fans, but something about the drink’s light texture makes me want to stretch it into the rest of the year.
Conclusion: If you’re in Houston, you should be drinking at Anvil.
