Welcome Spring (and Highballs)
Just a quick one today, as we’ve got family in town, and it’s just about all I can handle. The first official day of spring was this Sunday, which I’m rather grateful for. Summer is my favorite season, but I’ll settle for spring. The farmer’s market is going mad with strawberries and snowpeas and all other kinds of seasonal delicacies. I snagged a patio set off Craigslist for cheap and have been spending too much time imagining parties on the deck.

On the drinks front, I’m switching gears a bit and enjoying highballs. They’re lighter, they’re faster, and they just don’t give a damn. A highball is fundamentally a drink for when you can’t be bothered, which is not to say one should never be bothered, but it’s good to have solid options in the easy-as-pie category. Pictured is one of my top three highballs*: a Hendrick’s and soda. I have long loved Hendrick’s gin, and the rose and cucumber notes that it’s famous for seem so perfect for spring.
The Hendrick’s and soda was originally suggested to me by one of the bartenders at the Lustre Pearl here in Austin. It was a bit hot, and a bit dusty, and we were standing around outside for a happy hour. The suggestion really hit the spot, and it’s made it into my regular rotation. I know there are more dignified things to do with gin, but when I just want a quick sip of something light, this is perfectly lovely.
What’s your favorite highball?
*For the record, my other two favorite highballs are bourbon and ginger and greyhounds, although I especially love the greyhound’s sassy half sister, the salty dog.
